When Texas went from red to blue, in the '60's, why was it? Lyndon Johnson won a new term handily, if not overwhelmingly, yet John Tower managed to get that seat, and that was the crack in the dam Republicans needed to get a toehold and here we are.
Sometimes I worry we are on the edge of an abyss, a terrible stretch where all the values of our western Christian democrat culture will be snuffed out for many generations, liberty, learning, fairness, equality, opportunity and such like ideas. Our forebears managed to get this close to sweeping away a good many of the terrible afflictions of mankind, bring some security to what had been for many millenia a very short, uncomfortable existence beset with hideous dangers, risks, disease and discomfort of every kind, not universally, to be sure, but ever more in the direction of universal quality of life, and here we are on the verge of tossing it all away for the apparent promise of equality of result where everyone will be equally miserable.
