That verbal notice is probably sufficient, if you gave your real name and if they make a record of telling you.

OTOH, unlike KC5AV I always notify them about non-compliant signs in hopes that they will go through the effort, expense, and just plain ugliness of upgrading their sign(s). I tell them that if they do not post compliant signs then they are not telling CHL holders anything and that they may be putting themselves in line for a lawsuit if they attempt to arrest a CHL holder without displaying a compliant sign. I also include the CHL card text.
