He and his [former] wife Carole King wrote many songs together. This was one of them.

Re: One song that "speaks" to you
Have watched both of those within the last couple of months. Each time I watch Rio Bravo, I find myself whistling the "My Rifle, Pony and Me" melody randomly for a week or so afterwards..lolCharles L. Cotton wrote:I haven't thought of this song in years! Rio Bravo and El Dorado had the same themes and they are two of my top ten favorite movies.

Always liked that one, but my favorite of his is the hauntingly beautiful "Yesterday When I Was Young"Dadtodabone wrote:Oldgringo wrote:"I never picked cotton"

That's nice...always loved that song...such a haunting melodyDadtodabone wrote:I spent many a rain filled, gloomy afternoon during my 20s sipping a Rheingau Riesling and listening to The Moody Blues in the FRG.
40 years later I still feel the need to pull out one of the core seven albums when it clouds up, though I sip a nice whisky instead of the wine.
My son bought me this cd last year and told me to lighten up.
Amazing how well the music transcends genre.

Re: One song that "speaks" to you
Back in 68-71 we had a rock band in town that was pretty good....played big dances attended by all the kids in the area every other Saturday night. The drummer was a buddy of mine and did vocals on some of the songs also. He confessed that for over a year, when playing CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" he sang the lyrics incorrectly on the refrain, until during a practice session, with the volume way down, one of the others realized what he was saying: Instead of "there's a bad moon on the rise", he sang it "there's a bathroom on the right"

Re: "The Devil in Disguise"....Thanks Wild Bill...that was a REALLY nice rendition by both of them. A buddy of mine that was in business in Decatur, knew Leann's family and played me a demo tape she'd made. She was 12 years old at the time...about 6 months before "Blue" was released...an amazing voice!

Music died when The Beatles, and other noxious metallic noise makers, were allowed into, and to remain in, the colonies.
I'd have to take exception on The Beatles...in the late 60's/early 70's they they wrote a few beautiful melodies and lyrics : Yesterday, Hey Jude, Imagine, Let It Be, And I Love Her, Revolution

Willie's always a good choice...we used to call him Professor Nelson, because you could learn so much about life just listening to his music. I was fortunate to have been in San Marcos and Austin back when Wille, Waylon, Jerry Jeff, Janie Fricke, Marcia Ball, Townes Van Zandt, Rusty Wier, Gary P. Nunn, Alvin Crow and many more were playing in local honky tonks pretty much any night of the week...usually no cover...lol. A particular favorite of Willie's for me is "I'd have to be Crazy", cause it was written by a friend, Steve Fromholz.

James Taylor also had a great hit with "You've Got a Friend" another good one!WildBill wrote:Also a great song.Heartland Patriot wrote:I stand corrected on the singer of that song. James Taylor was the one with "I've seen fire and I've seen rain", right? And yes, time does pass by too quickly.

Re: One song that "speaks" to you
That's Harry Chapin, not James Taylor....great song...I don't see it as "chastizing" anyone else...just a bittersweet reflection on how fast life passes and how easy it is for relationships to get lost in the everday routines we all deal with. I don't know of a single father that hasn't looked back when his son was grown and wished that they had spent MORE time together as he was growing up...even if he was involved in all kinds of activities with him. Once that time is gone, you can't get it back and you wish you'd had more regardless. I'll second Conway Twitty's "That's My Job"...my dad always made me feel that he was there to take care of things no matter what & I've tried to make sure my son feels the same way. Another favorite is Sawyer Brown's "The Walk"...another reflection on the relationship between fathers and sons and the passing of time.Heartland Patriot wrote:I tell you, the one song I can NOT listen to anymore is James Taylor's "Cats in the Cradle". I missed a lot of seeing my kids grow up being gone on deployments and working long shifts in the USAF...and when I hear that song, it doesn't make me mad at myself (and I thought about this many times), but at James Taylor. Its like he just can't understand situations where parents have to be gone to give their kids a good life.
