Check out the technology link on the LWRC site for an explanation.

Bottom line is that with gas impingement the bolt asembly gets HOT and fouled because the gas is injected into the chamber to send the bolt back. This causes most of the malfunctions in the M series of rifles because the carbon builds up on the working surfaces as well as causes uneven expansion of the working parts. Dust and other junk is drawn into the chamber as the weapon cycles and mixes with the gasses, causing all kinds of further woe.

The only reason gas impingment is still around is because of institutional inertia in the DOD.
