Re: Garland gun range target of media smear campaign
The .30 restriction is in place as part of the agreement that the Owner (James Day) signed with the City of Rowlett. The city did not "force" the range to do anything. It is a 30 day restriction, or until all the other safety measures are in place that were part of the agreement, which include raising the rifle range berm and turning it into a "no blue sky" shooting position. Once those are all in place and the agreement is fulfilled, it will be opened back up to the way it was before. There should be no ill effects that come out of this, as long as the necessary safety measures are put in place. Who would complain about making a range safer for all those around it?

Re: Garland gun range target of media smear campaign
Agreed. That is absolutely all we are going for, although I can't speak for the other people that live on the other side of Pleasant Valley, much closer to it. I think that is where more of the noise related complaints have been coming from. So, just to clarify, we are not part of the "noise pollution" group, just the "stop bullets from hitting out houses" group.
My wife and I appreciate the support we have been getting on this, and do understand there will be others that will not be happy even with what we are trying to accomplish, but that's what makes this country great.
Also, just a quick background to show where we are coming from: My wife and I are both former military with CHLs, and proud carriers of .45ACPs, and owners of everything from competition pellet guns to a real nice Browning Over/Under (wife's Valentine's present 5 years ago). We both shoot competitively in all sorts of competitions including 3 gun and Sportsman Team Challenge. My wife also competed in the 2000 Olympic Games with the US Pistol Team. So, to have any inclination that we are anti gun/anti range is the furthest thing from the truth.

That statement was in 2010 and came from a woman who did not know what she was talking about. Look at all the different news articles about it, and you will see how things have been misconstrued.

Re: Garland gun range target of media smear campaign
No problem. We just want to make it clear that we're not looking to shut anything down, just make it safe for everyone around.

Re: Garland gun range target of media smear campaign
It's been documented that people shoot at the power lines that run right behind the range, as well as birds in the area. The problems are definitely not with the 99% of responsible shooters. It's the odd knucklehead that screws things up and could possibly kill someone.
It's the combination of raising the berm and improved overhead barriers that we hope will put an end to this.

Re: Garland gun range target of media smear campaign
Criminal investigation is still ongoing as to the ballistics, etc, but here is a map with the 2 houses hit on the 16th. For it to have been from someone in the landfill area, they would have had to have been shooting from directly behind the range, at the height of the day (6PM), when the range was 100% full. We found out later that night that a neighbor of ours drove by a few minutes before our house was hit, and said there was a line of people waiting to shoot, with the parking lot completely full. Remember, this was MLK Day so a lot of people were off work, and the weather was very nice.
Also, the gentleman that was hit in 2010 lives 3 houses down from the westernmost house shown on the map that was hit.
As for the home values, from everything we looked at when buying back in 2000, it is my opinion that the range did not have any effect on the values here. We looked at comparable homes in several areas, and prices were all pretty much the same. It also does not appear to be affecting values now, either, as the listed houses are selling with no problems. If anything, we might have hurt ourselves with this lawsuit, but that is the furthest thing from our minds.
