Re: NYPD shoots bystanders; suspect charged

Just to be clear, in no way do I think the gawdawful triggers on NYPD firearms excuses the officers. It is a training issue and the gawdawful triggers were created in response to a training issue while at the same time making other training deficiencies more apparent - especially to bystanders.

I believe the bystanders hit by the NYPD should "sue, baby sue" and win big. Maybe then they will do a cost justification model that shows taking the time and cost to train properly is a better investment than making NYPD triggers that the rest of the civilized would finds unsuitable in real life.

Then again what do I know. I do have a sweet used Kahr K9 that the NYPD had to sell because the trigger pull wasn't high enough - I lightened it even further and carry it daily and I consider it a good investment.

There is NO acceptable excuse for shooting bystanders. However there are reasons they shoot bystanders and lack of training would be the number one cause in my opinion. NYPD had a problem with negligent discharges but instead of increasing training to fix the problem they just mandated the triggers be 12 lbs hoping that making them harder to pull would make up for the lack of training.

Sure, with training people can overcome the 12 lbs trigger pull - but they can't even train their officers to keep their fingers off the trigger...

In my opinion the "professional law enforcement officers" should take it upon themselves to be the best darned officer they can be, dedicating much of their spare time to do the training the department won't/doesn't give them. But I have been told by LEO on this board that is unrealistic - they will do the minimum required and call it is good enough, and that is just sad.

I don't know any PGA golfers running the same garage sale clubs that I have.
I agree, you don't see Olympic clay shooters using a second hand Mossberg 500 as I do, and although I am sure they could hit more birds than I do with it, they typically would use the best equipment available because it works better in real life.

It isn't like the NYPD can only afford garage sale pistols. They specify that their officers use crummy triggers because they don't have it in their budget to train them to keep their booger hooks off the bang switch. How much trigger time training do you think these same officers are mandated?

NYPD is forcing their officers to use sub-par equipment due to lack of training and yet some think they should train their way past the sub-par equipment. I don't think it will work.

Re: NYPD shoots bystanders; suspect charged

Maybe it's time to rise the force required to pull a trigger on a NYPD firearm, 15 pounds doesn't seem to be enough.

I'm thinking welding them so it takes about 2000 pounds of pull. That might help keep the citizens of New York safe.
