Oh.

Dadgum, I'm embarrassed. I didn't read it like that at all. If that's what philip964 meant in his post, then -

philip964, I apologize. It was wrong of me to go off on that tangent.

"Supposedly?"

Seriously?

Am I the only one here old enough to remember when HPD had no problem with the private security in River Oaks impersonating HPD officers and doing traffic stops of anyone in a crappy car or dark skin who dared to drive through the place just to look at the pretty houses? It happened to me and to others I know, albeit ~30 years ago.

Reputations like that die hard. People will (arguably) rightfully remember the profiling done by River Oaks patrols for another generation or two.

Blacks and Jews were not permitted to live in River Oaks for a very long time. It didn't matter how much money you had, you could not buy in River Oaks if you were black or jewish.

That's why the jewish money went to the MacGregor area and built all those wonderful old homes down there. Later, that community migrated towards Braeswood and the area of MacGregor off 288 fell into decades of disrepair. Interestingly, the gentrification and re-building of that area began in earnest ~25 years ago with an influx of middle and upper-middle class blacks who rehabbed the dilapidated former Jewish enclave into what it is today - a place with a lot of nicely restored older homes.

The history of the wards, race, class, and real estate development in Houston is a fascinating one.

More to the point, it doesn't even mention River Oaks. QX isn't stupid. Announcing a march on River Oaks gets publicity. Why should he bother to actually go to River Oaks, once he's gotten the publicity he seeks?

This is hypocrisy overload...and a bunch of other terms that I won't use in polite conversation.

Anybody remember the bad old days, 30+ years ago, when the "River Oaks Police Department" (not real police, a private security company that drove cars just like HPD, wore uniforms just like HPD, etc.) would do traffic stops of anybody who dared to drive around the neighborhood in a crappy car? And HPD would back 'em up, to boot, despite the fact that they were using illegal flashing lights and impersonating HPD? River Oaks is a shining example of the fact that money buys power.

I think QX is crazy to be protesting at all but I can certainly understand the symbolism of doing it in River Oaks. If you want to complain that the power structure is corrupt, go where power lives.
