Anyway, I guess it depends on the kind of "zombie attack" there is. If it's a mass horde of brain-eating zombies heading towards you and your small group of desperate survivors, then any kind of full-auto rifles and as much ammo for it you can find!
If it's the occasional zombie you'd stumble upon as you scavenge for food and supplies in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, then a firearm, or any firearm, although highly useful, would probably be the weapon I'd least likely use so as to save as much ammo as possible. Instead, I'd use a crossbow, bow and arrow and one of those medieval halbert spears as much as possible. With a bow and arrow, you could easily make such a weapon, and since wood is a renewable source, you could continue to make arrows as you lose or break them in the skulls of the undead. Of course, a big-a$$ knife, a machete, a battle-axe and other flesh and bone cutting implements of medieval warfare would also be excellent options for those close-encounters without having to waste your precious but dwindling ammo supply.
I agree, plus it keeps the noise level down and since zombies are attracted to noise that is a good thing.
But any gun trumps no gun. And a high cap magazine is preferred. If you are in a solid safe house an accurate long rifle would be of choice to protect from a distance... Other than that you would want explosives.
