I see, I have a pretty good idea of where you are talking about.
As for the home-made bipod....progress is being made.

That is a neat idea...Does anyone know of a way to make your own bipod. I don't have a welder and don't want to weld on my new gun anyway. Is there a way to make one out of pvc piping or another material? Just theories are welcome too.racer32 wrote: The only ones I've seen were pretty flimsy-looking...probably not much more effective than using the bayonet for a "mono-pod."

Funny Story,
I was getting my SKS ready to take that picture earlier today when there was a knock on the door. I didn't have a great place to set it down so I went to the door with it, I leaned it up against the doorframe so I wouldn't scare anyone but realized it had been the knockity knock-knock knock knock that my brother always make so, thinking it was my brother, picked it back up while I opened the door. It turned out to actually be our neighbor asking for some firewood...He knows us so although it was a little akward at first it wasn't too bad. He was actually interested in it...the lesson of the day is don't carry battle rifles with bayonet extened to the door.

You make a very good point, my SKS got pretty hot after about 30 in several minutes...If you kept up that rate for very long it would get hot.KBCraig wrote:
That's why they have all the extra wood. How'd you like to grab that barrel for a bayonet charge immediately after laying down 30+ rounds of suppressive fire?

Those are nice. For 120usd I had the option of getting an SKS or a Nagant Carbine like yours. The SKS was semi-auto and better for plinking and the Nagant had a pretty poorly done finish on it. (Didn't even look original.) So, I got the SKS. I will post a picture of it later today, I have to go dip water out of a hole...

Wow, that ammo IS pricey. I couldn't afford 1,000 rounds with my tiny sum of only 150usd. I bought 500 rounds of SP Russian Ammo for 90usd plus sales tax. Brown Bear brand. I also got a pack of 20 stripper clips for 5usd. I went home and (making sure the SAFETY was on and the muzzle was pointed in a SAFE direction AND leaving the action open the ENTIRE time), practiced loading with stripper clips. I found it hard at first. I found it easier by starting with 3 roudns in the clip, loading, unloading and then adding one more round each time I reloaded the clip. When I got to the full ten it was as easy as cutting through butter with a hot bayonet.(Aren't I funny?)
I hope to take it to the range within the next week, that is if I don't have a bullet pop through our roof and kill me on new years... (Idiots shooting in the air, when will they learn?)
Has anyone tried this ammo before? I hope it is good since I have plenty of it.

I have seen these on several websites and they do have some appeal to me.
My concearns are that on an evaluation report someone said that he bought a stock that messed the gun up and that stock simply did not work on his SKS even though it was supposedly correct, this may have been a shipping mix up but I still am worried.
I am also do not completely like the idea of spending 70 or 80usd on a stock for a gun that only cost 120usd.
Have you used one of these personally? If you have and think they are worth the money I will definitely consider one.

That Russian Alphabet sure is strange looking....I would never want to leanr a language in which I would also have to memorize a new alphabet. I tried to learn spanish and it was hard enough, It has english lettering too.
What gets me is when I did some research a lot of websites call it "assault rifle". I dislike that term...the problem is it was not actually "defined" until 30 or so years (at least) after it's creation.
The story I hear is that "sturm gewher" (German for assault rifle) was supposedly made by Hitler to describe the MP 43/44 and was not defined at the time since there were really only a few "assault rifles" and they looked very different from other guns of the time period and were therefor easy to identify so actually standards to be considered a "sturm gewher" were not developed. By the time people actually started trying to make up standards in the later 20th century there were so many different kinds and guns that looked similar that several definitions survive today...many of which have an agenda behind them. Has anyone else heard of this?
