If I were to choose an EDC specifically for SD, I would not be able to choose a fixed blade - it would like trying to choose my 16" AR for firearm EDC. Even in a place where it's 100% legal, it's not practical for me based on my lifestyle.
My choice would be a karambit with the Emerson Wave feature.

I generally EDC a Kershaw Leek (one of the three that I own), a Kershaw Echelon, or a Benchmade Axis flipper. I'll pick the one that suits what I'm doing that day. If I'm in the office, I'll probably carry a Leek. Out in the field or in baggier casual clothes - probably the Echelon or the Axis.
I would not say that any of them are truly a "defensive" knife option...but I do ensure that every knife I carry is sharp, and has a blade that's 3" plus.
