Re: Signs for the CHLer

I just had a run in with an overzealous movie theater guard at the Edwards Greenway Plaza in Houston.

I just came from there and had been yanked out of a theater by "security". Apparently I printed or someone saw the holster attachment on my belt when I picked up a set of dropped keys. About an hour later a a "guard" asks me to step outside. He tells me that someone said that I had a gun. I said yes and that I had my license with me. He asks me if I'm on-duty. I said "no", and he responds by explaining that they don't allow off-duty cops to carry in the theater. I tell him that I'm not a cop and he proceeds to tell me that it's against state law to bring a gun into a theater. I asked him if the law had recently changed and he said it had. I asked the name of the law and he was unable to tell me. He says that I can put it in my car or leave. I put it in my car. When I get back he pulls me aside again and tells me that he called the police on me while I was in the garage. I asked him why he did that since I had complied and there was no signage anywhere that I could've ignored. He referenced the Newtown shooting. I was there for a preview and he said that if I’d been a paying customer I’d have been allowed to carry. I confirm that I’d heard him correctly by repeating what he said. He said there were 30.06 signs by the box office. I hadn't gone there and pointed out that the signs are supposed to be at the entrance. Otherwise I'd have to come in with a gun to see that I was breaking the law. I asked him about the changed law and he admitted that he’d lied. I asked him if he was lying about the signage and a superior interrupts and tells me that I’m free to return to the movie. I head back in and am stopped by another “guard”. He demands to waive a metal detector over me. I consent and he seems baffled about why the front of my pants set it off. I point out that I have a metal belt buckle and am allowed back inside. This “guard” has waived that wand over me at every preview I’ve gone to, as many as four a week, and waived me through every time. He knew I had a gun and has always known but always gave me a nod and let me pass. That’s why the word “guard” is in quotes, because he’s scanning for camcorders, not guns. He couldn’t even look me in the eye afterward and neither could another female “guard” who was with him. Throughout the movie the one who pulled me out kept standing at the front of the theater and staring at me.

The theater has no legal signage so they can’t be labeled anti-gun to concealed carriers and lose their money. However they are in fact anti-gun and will call the police on you when it suits them.
