I remember the gun control items listed at the beginning of the thread being part of what was termed "Brady II". I remember specificially the "arsenal" licensing and 6-round maximum capacities. I also remember once reading about how some of the Democrats were chanting "Brady 2! Brady 2!" at the 1996 Democratic Convention. More concrete were then-Representative Schumer's futile attempts to introduce such legislation in that year.

The NRA has enjoyed a recent string of successes, from the lawsuit protection bill (2005) to the prohibition on federal involvement in gun seizures during declared disasters (2006), not to mention the legislative victories in state legislatures on "stand-your-ground" type laws and Tom DeLay's single-handed snuffing of the Assault Weapons Ban (2004). In each of these cases, the Republicans and conservative-minded Democrats steam-rolled over the sputtering objections of the Brady bunchers.

When the Brady bunch and their like-minded friends acquire control over the House and Senate in January 2007, do not think for a moment they will overlook any opportunity to "pay back" the NRA and its friends in Congress. We must be prepared to defend the recent victories, keep on the lookout for stealth gun control legislation and last-minute attachments and modifications, and vigorously resist giving up anything to those who have no regard for us or what we stand for.
