To your question carrydove..... Repair guys get robbed all the time. We spend all day going from place to place. You may get called to some place way out in the middle of nowhere or you may have to go on a call in the worst spot in the city. ...think like a criminal/drug addict.. In my van, I have all kinds of stuff that a crackhead could pawn for a night full of free dope. Or they'll just trade for the drugs. Most commercial technicians make good money and the crooks know it. .So between our tools and personal money, we become targets .very likely scenario-- A nightclub on 6th street on a friday night has their a/c fail. They call me and I show up. I have to park in the alley so I can get on the roof. As I'm reaching in my van to get a tool.. A homeless guy pulls a knife and robs me. Then he disappears into the huge crowd.carrydave wrote:Totally depends on how your groomed, and your method of carry, and my gut feeling after speaking with you.
I honestly don't think i would react well. However if i had the chance to think about it, and your a likable person I might not go for my Mk14 EBR or mossy 500.... See armed men i don't know qualifies as a security risk in my home. bonded and insured or not.
Also what if say you do a job for someone sitting on some drugs or something. you'll stand a good chance of getting killed. People don't generally attack repairmen do they?
phew this is a complex question...
edit - more on the fly by night outfits...
if the any of the guys that just finished a paint touch up job here at the house exposed a weapon, I likely would have called their boss right away.
I
there is also society and custom. I do not believe it is customary to carry a gun while doing calls in people's homes unless you are a repo man or bounty hunter.
guess I'm going to buy 30.06 signs.....

Re: What would you say to a repair guy if you saw his gun
I agree about the commercial calls. I'm in the hvac service industry and I mainly do commercial calls. You never know where you are gonna be called out to. A lot of our clients we've had for years. (A lot of state buildings). These big buildings are often nighttime hideouts for homeless people. There is usually water and some sort of shelter under the pier and beam buildings and parking garages. Any call in the entertainment district in Austin can be pretty scary. As I'm reading everyone's posts, it looks like a good carry bag is the way to go.RPBrown wrote:Not just the homeowner that worries me. 90% of my work is commercial but on occassion I do go to a home. However, In my younger days when I was "working my tools", there were times I encountered not so friendly wildlife. Snakes on several occassions, coyotes under a house (nearly made a new exit in the floor on that one), raccoons, etc.. I might add that both times I was robbed, I was on a commercial call.03Lightningrocks wrote:Two issues for carrying in homes of other people to be VERY aware of. First and most important, if you do end up using your weapon against a person in their home, you are going to have a very tough time esplainin that one Lucy! Second and a very big issue for anyone doing repair work that involves sweat and summer heat. Sweat can destroy your precious carry piece. I was not thinking one day and started working on my truck in the garage. It was hot hot hot. I was sweating all over my PM9 while in its holster. We have had at least one instance of an armed person assaulting a home owner in a garage. Right after that happened, I was feeling the need to have my gun on me. I came in for a water break and pulled the gun and holster out and set it in the cabinet. I forgot about it for a day or so. It had rust all over it. Fortunately not deep rust. I was able to get it off without doing damage to the weapon. A couple more days may have been real bad.
I like the idea posted above about carrying in a tool bag. That eliminates the possibility of the weapon falling out in front of a customer or even being lost in the attic. It also takes care of the issue of sweating all over the gun.
Once more for fun. I cannot possibly stress the seriousness of the situation if you do shoot a home owner in their own home!

You made a good point MolonLabe. I can see how that could definitely make a woman all alone at home be uncomfortable.MolonLabe wrote:As a woman, i find it very uncomfortable to have an unknown repairman in my home, but as a CHL holder I can't imagine entering an unknown person's home without it. But I would think a repairman would do everything in his power to be 110% concealed to avoid any issues though? I know many women who would freak out if the "strange" guy in the kitchen had his weapon showing.
I guess the biggest thing is to make sure the weapon is secure and by no means have an accidental exposure. Once I realized I was at a safe location, maybe best to just put in in the van.

Re: What would you say to a repair guy if you saw his gun
First of all, since I don't have my chl YET there's probably no way I would carry into a residence and have some homeowner freak out and call the cops. I wouldn't want to mess up my chances of getting my chl and having to wait five years. But the way I will go about it once my CHL comes in.. If I'm packing at work, I had better make darn sure it's covered up. If I can't do my job and keep it concealed.. Then I better leave it in the van.

Re: What would you say to a repair guy if you saw his gun
I've actually been in my van in a public parking lot doing paperwork in the daylight and had someone try to open my passenger side door. Of course it was locked. Which probably saved the would be car burglars life. My windows are kind of dark and I think he didn't even see me in the van. In the past 15 years I've had numerous things happen that could have gone wrong. I'm very street smart and was able to avoid the bad situation. A couple years ago an Austin police officer shot and killed a bad guy in an apartment complex. The neighborhood lined the streets and were almost rioting. I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. As I passed through the crowd, they pounded on my van and tried to open my doors. All I could think about was Reginald Denny getting pulled out of his truck and getting hit in the head with a brick. Then kicked by the crowd. That was the last time I ever went to work without my pistol!

What would you say to a repair guy if you saw his gun
I'm in the service industry, mainly commercial, but sometimes have to do residential calls. As of now I always keep my pistol in my van because i do not have my chl yet. ( still in BG check phase right now)...There has been some calls where I felt I needed to carry. For instance, downtown Austin at night in high crime areas. I had the mind frame that I'd rather get caught with it than without it. So i packed it on my person anyway. My question to the forum is: If you called an a/c guy or plumber to your house and you saw his pistol in his waste band while he was working...what would you do. Would you get mad and tell him to leave... Ignore it... Or ask if he has a chl and have a little gun talk while he's there? I personally would rather see the gun than plumbers crack! Lol
