This is not a simple case of self defense. It is also a case of deadly force in defense of property and stopping the commission of a violent felony. Remember, Center Of Mass means the center of the largest mass available to you at the time. You can only shoot at what you can see and/or where you can point your gun. The BG could have been over the top of this guys drawn gun, with only the legs in front of him available to shoot.
