GEM-Texas wrote:Reading the bill, it also mentions firearms and ammo. It would seem to me then that the San Antonio local ordinance prohibiting loaded long arms in your vehicle is truly void. It was clearly against state law but SAPD would say that they would use the local ordinance pretty recently.

This would seem to truly short circuit this.

The knife provision in SA was ridiculous. You see such knives all over the place and sold everywhere.
That is existing language that has existed in the Texas Local Government Code since 1985. That San Antonio ordinance has been void for thirty years.

Yes, it does, and yes they are. :cheers2:

This is definitely good news.

Unfortunately, HB 3884 (decriminalization of "illegal" knives) was killed after Senator Whitmire double-crossed us. He agreed to sponsor HB 3884 and hear it in his committee, in order to get one of his own bills out of the author's (Rep. Harold Dutton) committee.

Then, after passing the bill out of committee (on unanimous vote) and recommending it for the Local and Uncontested Calendar, he pulled it down.

HB 3884(Dutton) on the Senate Regular Order of Business, 2nd reading, for today, 05/23/15:

Note: It's a LONG list, but it's down near the bottom, about 1 inch up.
The Senate doesn't follow the regular order of business. Most likely, this bill will be heard on the Local & Uncontested Calendar.

Knife Bills (HB 905 & HB 3884) in Jeopardy

Although both HB 905 (knife preemption) and HB 3884 (decriminalization of "illegal knives") passed unanimously in the House, Chairman John Whitmire (D-Houston) is refusing to give them a hearing in the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice.

http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/BillLook ... ill=HB3884" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Please call Senator Whitmire's office (512-463-0115), and politely ask that these two bipartisan* bills, which passed the House unanimously, receive a committee hearing as soon as possible.

Please also call the office of Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick (512-463-0001), and voice your displeasure that the chairman of the committee to which he assigned these universally popular bills is refusing to schedule either bill for a hearing.

*HB 905 has three Republican authors and two Democratic authors. HB 3884 has a Democratic author but wide support from both parties. In the House, both bills had unanimous support in committee and on the floor. National publications like Bloomberg magazine and The Christian Science Monitor have pointed to these bills as part of a larger civil rights battle to prevent the type of discriminatory enforcement of vague knife laws that led to the arrest of Freddie Gray in Baltimore
