Having some training in knife fighting myself, I would vehemently say that one should not bring a knife to a gunfight. Further, if the fight is with me, it's a gunfight.

"Defending" yourself against an attacker using a blade with empty handed techniques, or even with a knife, is probably going to get you hurt, possibly killed.

Pepper spray, while generally effective, is not a great option. They may go down, they may not. If I am about to attack you with a knife, and you pepper spray me, you will be cut. Severely.

Tasers are not a bad choice if you have the time and distance.

You should still, when using less-lethal force options, always be prepared for immediate progression to deadly force.

Given the choice betwee a gun and a knife, both of which I am trained and familiar with, I will certainly always pick a gun. I can get that gun into action faster than I can the knife, at any rate.
