Wow...you spent time on this...lolDadtodabone wrote:Pants/Trousers evolved from fitted stockings, pantaloons/trews, that were made and donned individually. Is it two or four?
Parenthetically it was the shortening of the tunic during the Medieval Warm Period, that led to the creation of the codpiece which joined the pairs.
A modern iteration of the codpiece can be found in the U.S. Navy enlisted mans trousers.

Instruments and tools which feature identical limbs which are joined have always been referred to in the plural. Calipers, tweezers, scissors, pliers. Scissors is a plural noun; thus "a scissors" would be wrong. To refer indefinitely to one unit, one should always use pair, as in "a pair of scissors". With the definite article the and the plural adjectives these and those, pair does not have to be used: those scissors are terrible, try these scissors, the scissors are bad, etc.

Re: Word use that drives you up the wall!
Never use the word 'yes' on the phone unless you know the the person calling. There was a scam going around in businesses a while back where the business would get a call. The caller would ask something like, "are you open?" Of course, you answer, "yes". They would then send you a toner cartridge to a printer you don't have and send a bill to you for $400. When you try to tell them you didn't order and aren't going to pay, they play a recording of you saying, "yes." They won in court when the person called identified their voice saying yes...lol.

Re: Word use that drives you up the wall!
The only one I would debate with you is the "dual tandem"...though I would say tandem duals. As in two dual axles mounted in tandem on a semi rig truck or trailer...the rest of them are worth a chuckle though...Redneck_Buddha wrote:Here's a list of pet-peeve pleonasms, from the Department of Redundancy Department. Not only are they redundancies that are strung together, but they also contain a bunch of words that are unnecessary:
-"Past history"
-"Pre-planning"
-"ATM machine"
-"End result"
-"Totally necessary"
-"Basic fundamentals"
-"Circulating around"
-"Close proximity"
-"Pair of twins"
-"Dual tandem"
-"Unsolved mystery"
-"True facts"
-"Rio Grande River"
-"Somewhat unique"
Some of these may be open for debate.![]()
While we are at it, let's give a thought to these phrases and words:
"Chalant" (in case you really do care)
"I've told you a million times, stop exaggerating!"
"Half the lies we are told are untrue."
"It's deja vu all over again" - Yogi Berra
"When you hit a fork in the road, take it" - also Y.B.
"If we do not succeed, the risk of failure greatly increases."

Overused word that irritates me: literally...my 18yo daughter literally uses it all the time...lol
The misused word or phrase that ranks at the top of my list is "I could care less" when they clearly mean that they "couldn't care less"..."I could care less" really means that you care some..."I couldn't care less" means that you don't care at all...lol
