The felon hasn't served his sentence. That's where the confusion is.

His sentence is...to spend 10 years in prison (or whatever) AND lose the right to own a gun except for a very restricted case.

That's the sentence. He continues to serve his sentence for the rest of his life.

The same would be true if a penalty included a fine. That money is lost forever and he will spend the rest of his life recouping the fine.
