Re: open carry

Protect Our Rights wrote:Well since my last post was locked, I will post it here Texas NEEDS open carry. I can't wait till the day that there is constitutional carry in every state. Any politician that is even 1% against the 2nd amendment will NOT get a vote from me or any of you hopefully. If they are against the 2nd then they are prolly against the rest of them as well.
This "Your with us or against us" attitude will do us more harm than any thing else. I personally feel that every politician should pass what I call the "Uncle Ted" Test in order to be eligible for office. The Uncle Ted test is essentially requiring them to be at least as friendly to gun rights as Ted Nugent, more so if possible. However if given a choice between a member of the Brady Campaign or someone who is good on the second amendment but won't support OC I will vote for the latter to prevent the former from winning.

And yes, a candidates position on the Second amendment is my first factor for determining how I vote but given equally good candidates on that I will decide using other factors. I personally feel that the only gun laws on the books should be there to keep violent felons from having guns, but we may differ even on that.

Re: open carry

#1: I don't think that OC will cause the "demise" of the CHL, but it will hurt licensees. Larger cities, and businesses such as chain stores, will see more valid 30.06 signs.
#2: Your right here, the proposed bill coulda/shoulda been written better.
#3: I'm not a CHL instructor, but I really don't think they are making a living off of their CHL classes. Of the few that I personally know one barely breaks even. Besides we are not talking about constitutional carry at this time and I would honestly prefer that when we do start looking at it we go about it the same way that AK and AZ did. They have legal open and concealed carry without a permit, but the permit is there for those who wish to take advantage of reciprocity agreements and carry in other states.

billv wrote:As for more 30.06 signs - yes there will likely be a flurry of them put up.
While we can work on getting rid of new 30.06 signs, we would rather they not be posted in the first place. A better bill would have avoided this, after all we want to expand all gun rights instead of restrict some and expand others.
billv wrote:Finally I've seen mention in this thread that the open carry issue could have been fixed with a simple two page bill. If it was so easy, they why wasn't that done? There is no reason to bring personality differences into this issue. Can we please all just get along or should we meet in the middle of the street at high noon and settle the issue (and make the antis dream come true)? The goal here is our 2A rights. Let's not fight between those who wish to OC and those who don't. With this current bill you can do both. It's a first step in the right direction, just like getting the ability to conceal carry was a step.
The people who know how to write a simple two page bill are busy using their political capital on other second amendment issues. If by can we all get along you are asking "Can we all agree to support a flawed bill?" Then the answer is no we won't all get along, but we can disagree in a civil fashion and avoid name calling, character assassination, threats, and other antics that were pulled by OCDO folks in the last session. A step in the right direction is often a good idea, unless its a step off a cliff. When that is the case we need to step in a direction that doesn't hurt us, or take us backwards.
