I listed to this podcast last year and thought it was pertinent to this conversation, so I went back and listened to it again and wanted to share. It's an interview with Aaron Hampton with Eotech and I thought it was a very educated conversation about their Holographic Weapon Sight, it's advantages and disadvantages. Worth a listen if you are interested in an Eotech HWS.

Several Aimpoint and Trijicon optics can be left on for years, but changing the batteries each year isn't a bad idea regardless.

I guess EOTech battery life is horrible when compared to Aimpoint's and Trijicon's that you can leave on for years. As far as my EOTech, it's more than enough to get me through a weekend of shooting a rifle class. It auto powers off after a few hours of use unless you push one of the brightness button's (snooze) to keep it on. Previous generation EOTech's had issues with battery life. Mine has not given me any issues.

I have an EOTech EXPS3-4 on my AR. It's the first red dot I've owned and picked it up from a guy on another message board. I've heard horror stories of battery life issues with them but I leave mine off until I need it. It's easy enough to turn on quickly and I love the reticle on it. Yes the battery doesn't last long enough to leave it on for "years" and it's bulkier than the Aimpoint and other similar models, but it's a trade off I'm willing to live with.
