I hope he is able to achieve some peace of mind and the ability to defend himself without hurting anyone else through negligence.
Someone so hardheaded might have a hard time understanding the concepts taught in the class and responsibilities of carrying a handgun and the associated issues of possibly taking a human life.
Many of us have been handling firearms our whole life and still relize we do not know everything. Part of being a friend like you are doing is insisting he listen to wise advice, no matter how hardheaded.
This is not a game of paintball, and if he is as serious as he sounds, you could very well be dragged into a situation that you will regret in the long run.

Maybe he needs a shotgun instead of a handgun if he is concerned about home defense.
A good home defense shotgun is a whole lot cheaper than a Glock and is easier to master.
There is the intimidation factor as well.
