Re: Dallas PD Gang Unit Officer Killed

Everyone was in full uniform and announced that they were police. Once the door was opened he was shot.

The following is from the Dallas Morning News website and is pretty well right on with how this went down:
About 6 p.m. Tuesday, Smith and about six other gang-unit officers went to the Oak Wood Place Apartments to arrest Jobe.

Smith, flanked by two other officers, approached the door and knocked. Someone inside asked who was there, and Smith responded with a fake name, police officials said.

When the suspected gunman opened the door, Smith yelled that they were the police, according to the preliminary investigation. The suspect then tried to close the door, and Smith pushed back. That's when he was shot.

Officers returned fire, frantically trying to pull their fallen comrade out of the line of fire as the gunman opened the door and continued shooting. No one else was injured in the gunbattle.

Re: Dallas PD Gang Unit Officer Killed

Situations like this make it obvious why some PD's use their SWAT teams serve warrants.
DPD has three teams that run felony "high risk" warrants - SWAT, Gang Unit, and Narcotics. Narcotics focuses on drug warrants and the other two units handle the rest. It used to only be SWAT but we have so many high risk warrants in Dallas that they had to add the Gang Unit.

Trust me, the Gang Unit is trained for and knows how to run these type of warrants; and based upon the review we did last night of this shooting these officers did it exactly by the book. When you're shot in the face like Norm was no helmet or body armor could have prevented this type of outcome. When you're the doorman on a warrant team you run that risk.

Thanks for every one's thoughts and prayers.
