I haven't seen the movie, but this could be handled in two ways.

One way is just to have him score from an illegal source because 'that's just what people do'.

Another would be that he goes to the illegal source after finding out that in CA (for example) there is a 15 day waiting period for handguns, where this requirement is depicted as silly, unnecessary, unfair, or unjust.

The irony is that the same people sitting in the audience cheering for the protaganist as they blow the bad guys away (under dubious legal circumstances) are the ones who will vote for anti gun rights politicians who want to take our gun rights away (not to mention the people who MAKE the movies who should and probably do know better).

My guess is that they tend to not be gun owners themselves.

Meanwhile, gun rights advocates such as the people on this board cringe when we see these 'Death Wish' storylines play out, as we know that the vigilantism that is depicted is both highly illegal and not typical AT ALL of CHL'ers.

Basically, an underlying theme of these movies is vengence, which WE all know has no place in the law. But with the non gun owning public not knowledgeable about these concepts, it is all too easy for people to get the wrong idea as to what self defense is all about.

For these reasons, I believe these movies DO have a political effect, as they insinuate themselves into what may pass for the 'knowledge base' of the ignorant.

I'd like to see a movie telling the story of someone who used a legally carried gun in lawful self defense, showing how they came to decide to carry, the training they took, how the crime played out, and a REALISTIC treatment of the aftermath of the shooting.

Such a movie might increase support for 'Castle Doctrine' laws and concealed carry in general.
