They also sell the Varmint/target variant with flattop upper, bull barrel, and free-floated aluminum handguard for $669. I think that's a pretty good deal.

Cheaper Than Dirt ran the DPMS Panther Carbine on sale for $599 a few weeks ago, sold out quickly.

You can probably get a pretty good idea of the price range I'm shopping ;)

Right now I'm building one, with a lightly used 20" A2 upper, shopping for a lower. If I get ambitious, I have some forged lower blanks to machine.

I think of these things a "model cars for grownups".
At the gun shows I never see any ARs for less than $650. They might have them, but they get snatched up pretty fast. I can usually only go on sundays since I have to work almost every saturday

I have gotten good deals on sunday too though from individuals. I need to check out this military gun supply. I'm afraid to go. Afraid for my bank balance!

I bought an Olympic because it was cheap and just a plinker anyway. Another friend of mine has one and we don't have problems with them. From what I've heard, all AR's are military spec. I don't know if that's even correct or if it makes a difference in reliability. I'm sure someone on here knows.

I like my AR because it's the first one I've had. I will probably end up building the next one or buying a modified one (such as the rock river) because there are so many ways you can go with them. For me, I just need a plinker. For a LEO, his life might depend on it. That's a big difference. The only reason to spend over a grand is if you just want an expensive toy. Not that I'm against that, by any means...
