Austin Area Rocketry Group 585 http://aarg.org flies 1/8A to M motors in a large corn field between Hutto and Taylor on the first Saturday of the month. I'll be there this weekend with my 9mm pistol (in a retention holster) and 13mm to 29mm motors. ;-)

Do most retention holsters actually have your belt going through a cutout in the holster vs belt clips? Obviously the guy who wants to carry his belt holster without a belt is not going to have much "retention".
I have several paddle holsters that take such a firm bite on the inside of my pants I have trouble taking them off.
Both my Fobus and my Uncle Mike's paddle holsters require manipulation of the belt and/or wasitband for removal of the holster. The Fobus came with my Tanfoglio BTA90. I'll be using the Uncle Mike's paddle holster with thumb break for open carry.

I've done my risk analysis. My main concern is keeping the pistol in place as I recover my sport rockets. Crossing fences, ditches, rough terrain, etc.

At some point, retention devices begin to intrude on your own ability to draw your gun if you need to. All of this noise about retention holsters is just one reason why, as a general thing, concealed carry is superior to open carry. If you're that scared that someone can take your gun, maybe you should consider not letting him know you HAVE a gun.

My answer is: [A] you made the decision to carry a firearm worth from several hundred to several thousand dollars out in the open; therefore don't be a cheapskate on your holster choices; and [C] DON'T assume that spending money on gadgets will make up for your own personal shortcomings in paying attention to what is going on around you.

Buy a retention holster if you want, but understand that in the end, retention happens between your ears, not in your choice of gadgetry.

I use a holster with a strap to help keep the pistol in its place while I am concentrating on something else.

TAM, there is another aspect to carrying which I have mentioned in several posts and which you seem to be overlooking. In a word; activity.

I'm still young and active enough to recover my own rockets. Sometimes they land as much as a mile from the launch site. I try to keep them closer. ;-) Recovery entails crossing rough terrain. I use a holster with a strap to help keep the pistol in its place. Any other benefit is gravy.

Your mileage will very.

What say you?

Thanks!
When carrying concealed, I use an IWB holster with no retention. When carrying openly, I use either a belt slide holster with a strap or a paddle holster with thumb-break. The strap keeps the pistol in place as I traverse broken terrain while recovering my sport rockets.

The picture below was taken outside of Tucson, AZ, in August, 2015. I'm on the left with my 9mm. My son (18 then) is on the right with his Nike Smoke scale model and his .45 sub-compact.
