personally, I think you need to plan for 3-5 days in a disaster.. doesn't matter much if it's natural or man made. You need food, shelter, protection. You have to be MOBILE and fluid.. Whatever you're gonna take has to be portable by your WIFE if you're not around at the moment.

We have 'bug out sites' designated at locations 20, 50, 100 and 200 miles from home. We have designated meeting and message points. Fuel for your vehicle will be impossible to get (there was very little fuel around Dallas for a week after Katrina and the one after that. You may not be able to get very far out of town, the roads will be jammed.
