I'm still new at this - a CHL can carry on the parking lots, sidewalks, etc. of a school, just not in the building?

Academic people are interesting critters. It's acceptable to praise Che Guevara but not Wayne Lapierre, and worship of Saint Che is just plain weird.

He is said to have been a homophobe. His face is on the Cuban three peso bill. There is irony there, somehow, that must surely cause the most politically correct professor a quiet snicker.

And, of course, he was a dirty commie and I don't say that without facts backing it up.

His other nickname was Chanco (pig) for his foul personal hygiene. Historians agree, ol' Che was a dirty commie.

And if academics can argue drunk 18 year-olds waving guns in class because of campus carry, I think I should be able to rant about professors and Che Guevara. They both apply to the campus carry argument with equal weight.

I have spoken with many CHL holders who wish they did not remove the renewal training requirement. Unless every CHL holder stays on top of new legislation they have no idea of what changes have been made and the renewal classes provided this information. CHL instructors are looking for new ways to generate revenues since the removal of mandatory renewal training has gone away. The prices of CHL classes has dropped so those who own their own facilities and ranges need to replace that revenue stream. Personally I would have no issues if renewal training came back and I am not an instructor.

McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara, who testified so eloquently on the side of the angels to the Senate committee, is a CHL instructor. I think when the laws change I might go through his class just to hear what he has to say. He's a former US Marshall, a sitting Sheriff, and has no problem with law abiding citizens taking responsibility for self-defense.

A heck of a nice guy, in other words.

Great question from a Representative. A UT student said he wouldn't feel safe around guns, and a Representative asked if the student felt unsafe in the committee room, where you just didn't know who was packing.

I liked that question. I sure wouldn't feel unsafe there, whether or not I was armed. No reason to be, in fact, just the opposite. A very polite, generally civil environment. A nuthouse, maybe, but civil.

There was a UT student organization spokesperson testifying against the gun bills, and I have to say she brought out a couple of great points. Great points. Genius.

Reading between the lines, I can tell she believes in the power of law. Make it illegal and abusive behavior stops. Yessum, I understand.

Her more overt point was outstanding. She spoke of how drunkenness and substance abuse denies our college youths the proper use of their minds. They can't think. They're too drunk.

Clearly we must adjust the drinking age upward. All we have to do is pass a law. You have to be 26, or 30, or Kenyan, or something to be President, why not bring the drinking age into alignment? All we have to do to save college kids is take away their beer.

Driving, too. Cars are dangerous and if you're sotted, you can't drive. Bump the driving age, take the sipper cups of beer from the kiddies, and let's save some lives.

She also said something about open carry and campus carry proposals, but none of that made much sense.

I didn't get his name, but the current guy talking about how he fired three rounds at a fleeing cell phone thief isn't helping the cause.

If I got punched in the face, I'd certainly be disappointed in my attacker's sire and dam and their parenting skills, but there's nothing there to start shooting over.

And if the guy ran off - problem solved, conflict resolved, why would anyone in his right head risk bystanders for a cell phone?
