Re: Loading weapon in public
I find any airport parking lot or garage (and walking to them) to be far a more likely mugging location than an airport restroom stall with the door locked, particularly when the place is mobbed after a flight lands. Either way, my gun is not my only defense. I practice administrative procedures like loading and unloading, and cannot figure out why my home or my hotel room is a safer place to do so (from an ND standpoint) than anywhere else. But if you are not up to it on the move, then do it at home, hotel or whatever.

Re: Loading weapon in public
I've found this a minor but interesting trivia point. Most agents have told me to put it INSIDE the gun box (which in my case was always a pistol case inside of a bigger piece of luggage), but some have had me place it on top of/outside the pistol case. Some times it is orange, sometimes white. I just do whatever they say, and it has always gone thru OK.Excaliber wrote:...
After inspection, you lock the box and fill out a declaration tag that goes into your luggage - preferably on top of the gun box so it's readily visible to a TSA inspector.

Also, the agents who actually make me prove it is empty have been in the minority. Most just ask me, and then have me fill out the tag.

For those who answered the airport scenario by using the restroom -how do you avoid public panic with the racking sound? It's pretty distinictive. Pehaps a well timed *cough*? Or maybe using the fart app on your smartphone?![]()
But seriously - how?
I've not found it a big problem. Either there have been loads of people in there and it was noisy, or noone. But you can always flush, most airport toilets sound like a jet taking off...

Re: Loading weapon in public
Ding Ding! Every airport I have been to has a restroom fairly close to the check-in and baggage pickup areas. I put my bag to be checked (or that I just "unchecked") across the toilet. Makes a handy platform, and I don't drop anything I want back into the pot.WildBill wrote:IANAL, but a loaded gun and unloaded gun are treated the same. So, IMO exposing it while loading, already loaded or unloading are all the same.
In the situations that you describe, I go into the restroom [into a stall] and unload/load prior to going out in public.
