gdanaher wrote:What's the rule about a plate that is perfectly legible but whose reflective surface no longer reflects? I have a specialty plate that can be used on multiple vehicles--same number on all cars. The plates on my car were new in 1995. They've been on 3 or 4 cars, but since they aren't dinged, I use them and keep the new ones they send me on the shelf. No rule that says I have to have a new plate--just that the plate must agree with the registration. I currently have a lifetime supply--2 new sets of blue on white stamped, 2 sets of red, white, and blue flat digital, and one of the new black and burnt orange on white digitals. One of these days those on the car might need to be replaced!!
From the DMV site:
We can't expect license plates to last forever. Exposure to dust, dirt, rain, and wind gradually strips the license plates of their reflective coating. To help make sure vehicles are easily identifiable on state roads, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires that drivers obtain new license plates - both a front license plate and a rear license plate - every seven years.

Although I have had the same plates on my Dodge Ram since 1999 when new. I have never mounted the front so it is still shiny and newish. The back is faded pretty bad though.

Re: Texas License Plate Law?????

I just read thru the 234 page bill and i saw where they struck the requirement but did not see where it was put back in. From what I can see there is no plate requirement for the front now. Did I miss something in my reading? Was the intent to remove the front plate requirement?

Re: Texas License Plate Law????? First stop!

Okay, my 99 Dodge 4x4 has never had a plate on the fron. I have never been stopped in it for that either. DPS stops me for it and writes me a warning. I asked him what the ticket would be since there is no penalty but he really didnt understand. He was vietnamese and actually didnt seem to speak english well. I asked 3 diffrent ways what other ticket he could write for it and he said he would have to look it up, he didnt know. I dont think he was aware the law changed.

Of course, but it seems that some are under the impression that the penalty was removed when it was actually the requirement to display both plates. I remember telling my wife about this over a month ago and we just saw it for the first time on the news last night. They said that the Dallas PD Chief said they were still going to stop folks without even just the front plate if they felt the need or something like that. My first thought was also that if they do find something else how are they going to make the case for probable cause when there wasn't any crime to begin with. Sounds a lot like the Minneapolis police chief saying they will continue to stop anyone that openly carries a gun even though it is legal.
This sure sounds like it was the penalty removed.
""As part of the update, the new law deleted the license plate statute, returning parts of it to Section 502.473 and 504.943. In moving around the legal language, the bill went through the entire legislative process without anybody noticing that a key line was deleted without providing a replacement: "An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.""

Re: Texas License Plate Law?????

But it is still required to be there, so they can still stop you. You will get a $0 ticket but the stop is, unfortunately, legit. I have lost track of the number of stops in the last 20 years for no plate but have never paid a dime. They either issue a warning or the judge just dismissed it. I think that if they find drugs or Justin Beiber cd's then the evidence will stand as the plate is still required to be there. Maybe Rothstein or another LEO will weigh in here.

Re: Texas License Plate Law?????

I have seen some nice hideaway units for show cars that were nice and not pricey. I had actually been shopping those lately. Was gonna wire it to open and close with the ignition. Slides away under bottom of the bumper like those radios with flip out screens.

I agree, but the front plate has to be displayed, its the law :rules: , but the law doesn't specify it must be on the bumper ;-) This would probably be a judgment call by the officer who pulls me over.

I see so many cars without the front plate its ridiculous. But, I did have a friend recently get a $200 fine recently.

She's too pretty to put holes in the bumper.
I did some research and I stand corrected. I had asked several officers and got the same response from them years ago, has to be on front of the car.

Re: Texas License Plate Law?????

geekwagun wrote:There will no longer be a fine for not having license plates - I read it as the front plate is not required and rear plate is now optional since there is no fine imposed for not having plates displayed.

I bought a new car and didn't put the front plate on the bumper, its in the front window. As of Jan 1 the front plate will not be in the window anymore, but I will keep the rear plate on. No reason to draw any more attention from law enforcement than needed.

I posted this a while back on a car forum and there was a LEO that said they have not been made aware of the change (yet). What about the LEO's on here? What is your take on this law? The AG was supposedly reviewing this, any news from them yet?
All you are doing is uglying up your dash. The front window is just as illegal as none at all. I have never had front plates on my cars and only gotten 1 ticket I can remember in the last 20 years about it. DPS pulled me over last week and even he didn't ticket me. They don't seem to really care about it, just a good fishing excuse. I would rather pay a fine every few years than ruin a gt500 front end.
