I would follow his advice and staple the copy and mail it. Like he said if its not there then that's all the CHL guys will see. It the easiest and fastest. And I seriously doubt they do a more detailed search then what you did at the website.
DPS sends a Trooper into the counties you have resided in and does a thorough court check.

Yeah but didn't he state earlier that he called those counties and they had nothing? I doubt, since he can purchase firearms, that something that happened 20 years ago and was dropped will show up on record. If it was something meaningful to Texas it would have been on TDPS website. I would think reporting that charge and him having the problem he's having to get his own info would slow everything down on TDPS's side since they aren't as motivated. But it's just my opinion.
My post was soley in response to the sentence in red, above.

You are mistaken about the record being on the DPS website if it was "meaningful". Many counties miss reporting to TCIC.

Thanks for everyone's help. But if anyone has any ideas of what else I can do, please let me know.
Good luck and let us know what you think of the course.

I bet what you obtained will be fine. Include a little note of explanation.

Certified is a stamp on embosser that the clerk puts on the document with the seal, date and signature.

craigneasttx wrote:Thanks everyone. I have started the ball rolling.

I went to the website (dps criminal history) that yobdab referred to and paid my fee and searched myself three different ways and there was nothing on file. I thought I might have done something wrong and called and talked to a guy at the DPS office for the website. He said that if it shows "no records found" that it wont show any records when they pull it either. He recommended I just attach the printout to the application and said it would also speed up processing for the CHL.

I also contacted the District court and talked to a clerk and she said If I send in a request they will try to find something on it. But since it was 20 years ago the file will be archived and there is a small chance it will even be found. So I guess I should send in the request just to make sure?

I contacted the city police about the MIP's and both cities said, forget it man, we would never have a record of that. Not 22-24 years ago.

So finally I called the concealed handgun department and talked it through with them. They said dont put the MIP's because they make no difference. But I have to find some kind of disposition of the court case or it will just be rejected. I will go to the district clerks office in the morning and see what happens. I suspect they will not have any record of it what-so-ever.

So I am screwed.
You are not screwed. If they have no record ask for a "Felony Criminal History Clearance" letter, and get it certified. Be sure it goes back to the year you need. DPS prefers copies of the disposition from the case file, but if that is not available they will take the clearance letter.

Basically it will say something to the effect of;

The District Clerk of This county searched for felony records for the above subject from 1987 thru present and found the following;

NO HISTORY FOUND (or)

1998......................Att. Kidnapping................................Not Guilty

There are two main types of criminal courts in Texas; County and District. County Courts hear misdemeanor cases and District Courts handle felonies. The corresponding Clerk's office of each county is where records are kept.

In some counties, the clerks offices are combined.

Go the the courthouse of the county where you were charged and ask for the Criminal District Clerk's office. There you will request a certified copy of the disposition of your case. Since in happened in the late '80s. the records might be archived, and you may have to order the records to be picked up or mailed to you later. If they clerk cannot, for whatever reason, locate your file, then ask for a Felony Criminal History letter, certified.

As far as the MIPs; You will find those records either at the Municipal Court or Justice of the Peace court, wherever the MIPs were filed. City police file with the municipal courts, and Deputies, TABC agents and other non-city LEOs file with the JP. You can go there for the dispositions on those cases.

best of luck and welcome to the forum.
