DPS examines your local/federal criminal history; along with your state tax records, child support history (if applicable, for any arrearage), chemical dependency/psychiatric history (if applicable), and student loan history (for any defaulted loans). I'm leaving something else out, I'm sure...
It's a pretty thorough investigation (much more methodical than an FFL check for a gun transfer), but your CHL is worth the wait.
I know it's tough, but remain positive. My packet only took about a month for DPS to process, which is much quicker than years gone by. Some "older" members report waiting periods in excess of 90 days
for their original licenses. DPS has definitely become more efficient.
