No apology needed. And by the way, my choice of where to live gives me the opportunity to shoot anytime I want to without disturbing anyone, and without leaving my own place. It also provides lots of live targets such as snakes, coyotes, and hogs.Oldgringo wrote:Sorry, I reckon I should have used 'any metropolitan area' instead of 'location' in that above sentence. I think we'd be long gone from any location that required me to walk around the house/yard with a gun on my person.
I understand people not wanting to be armed in their own home. Different strokes for different folks and all that. I'm not criticizing anyone for carrying in their home, or not carrying in their home. I just wanted to find out how many other like minded people there were out there.

Sir, you did not offend ME in the slightest! The Annoyed Man wrote:That's why I never intended the questions to come off as condescending or intrusive. I am by nature a very introspective person.....not in an antisocial way, but rather in the sense that I spend a lot of time examining my own motives about almost anything, and it is often helpful to me to know how others answer these kinds of questions as a backboard against which to judge my own motives. A LOT of the time, when I ask questions that appear on their surface to be rhetorical during discussions like this one, I am actually engaged in this process of self examination. So apologies to all who were offended by my line of questioning.jed wrote:While I'm not Lynyrd and you didn't ask me, I will tell you what I do. At night I have a fairly obnoxious blue heeler with alpha issues with people she doesn't know sleeping beside the bed. Any sound not normal in or outside of our house at night, she goes ape-poop. She will wake me with plenty of time to reach for any one of many firearm options.
As for the dog, that luxury it is not an option for me. Not being retired yet, I spend way too much time away from the place to treat a good dog the way I would want them to be treated. When I retire, and slow down some more, I definitely see a couple of dogs on my wish list. Makes sense that my habits will then adapt to that situation.

Re: Do you carry at home?
I can reach a gun and a tactical light without getting out of bed. There is a laser on that gun, and the light will BLIND you (1300 lumens). I practiced enough to grab both with my eyes closed. The Annoyed Man wrote:If I lived in similar circumstances, I would probably feel exactly the same way. But I have the admitted luxury under my current circumstances to not have to live that way. OTH, and I've posted this several times, my plan is to buy a large piece of rural property in the next 5 years or so, and so my situation may well change; and if it does change, then I'll adapt to to it.Lynyrd wrote:I live out in the country. I'm not criticizing those who carry in the home at all times. I'm just seeking to understand why they feel the need. So Lynyrd, what do you do when you're asleep?

The Annoyed Man wrote:It depends..... If I'm heading out in the near future, or if I've been out and will be leaving again soon, then I'm carrying. If I'm home for the rest of the day, then I'm not carrying, but I have at least a pistol close at hand, and/or a shotgun, depending on where I am in the house. How about when you are asleep in bed?aaangel wrote:100% of home invasion happens at home. So yes i carry at home.
At least some home invasions happen to people who are asleep in bed. If you don't wear a holster and pistol when you're asleep, why not? Could it be that you think you can reasonably get to your firearm in time if you wake up to the sound of someone kicking down your door? If you think that, then why do you think you can't if you are awake?
You see where I'm going with this? I am sincerely NOT mocking you, but I am pointing out an inconsistency that is apparent to me regarding people who say that they carry 100% of the time in the home. Most who say that actually don't carry 100% of the time. They don't carry in the shower or bathtub. They don't carry while asleep. They don't carry while enjoying "personal time" with their significant others. At some point everybody makes the decision to set aside the gun, but keeping it close at hand where it can be quickly re-acquired if necessary. In other words, they do the calculus and come to the conclusion that, for the period of time that they set the gun aside, the exposure to additional risk is actually fairly minimal, and they are comfortable with that risk exposure.
So, if they are comfortable with that risk exposure during times when they are arguably the most vulnerable (i.e. asleep, naked in the shower/tub, in the midst of an intimate moment, etc), then why do they feel that the risk is NOT acceptable when they are the least vulnerable?
That is an inescapable point of logic that I can't let go of, and that is why I am comfortable not carrying, but having a firearm close at hand when I am home, indoors.
I hear you, loud and clear. Very well put, and very logical. For me, it's the "close at hand" that could be improved. When I am asleep I have a gun within arms reach and I practice putting my hand on it with my eyes closed. It has a laser, and there is a tactical flashlight that will blind you right beside it. When I'm in the shower, my gun is just outside the shower door. Other places in the house, not so much within arms reach. And when the grandkids are over everything is locked up in the safe except for the one on me. I think it all depends on how you operate at home, how many other people in the house, etc. Different circumstances drive different decisions.
Maybe my question was an effort to gather other examples to show the family that I'm not alone in my desire to carry at home. Thanks for all the responses.

Interesting. It's the 10 seconds part that has me really thinking. A bad guy can do a lot in 10 seconds. I used to think in the next room was okay, but in today's world I have changed my habits.Teamless wrote:I carry at home about 90% of the time.

Re: Do you carry at home?
LEO response for me is at least 20 minutes away. Even if they weren't, a few seconds can make a world of difference. My family doesn't always agree, but I carry until bedtime. Just wondering if I am alone.

Do you carry at home?
When you get home, do you unholster and put your gun away? Or maybe keep it fairly close by? I'm not fishing for any information that would violate any law about keeping guns locked up and safe from children. That's not the intent of this question, so please don't go there. Just wondering how prepared other CHL/LTC people like to be in their own homes. For instance, if someone breaks down my front door by surprise I would prefer to have a gun on my person rather than in the safe, or the bedroom. Given that context, do you keep your gun on at home?
I'm new, so if I'm breaking protocol here let me know and delete the question.
