This is true in most cases. However, some places still put you through the standard call in/verification. Bass Pro is one of these places. Last time I purchased a handgun there, it took at least 30 minutes. I used my CHL, filled out the paperwork, and then waited for the sales clerk to make the call and record all of their paper work. I was then escorted to the door (clerk carried my newly purchased weapon even though I was carrying my own). Didn't have a chance to carry my newly acquired piece until I was outside their building. I guess it could have been worse. At least they let me carry it across the parking lot.
