It didn't seem embellished to me, simply because there was no extraordinary bravado or feats of bravery by the narrator. He pointed out how he wasn't really prepared, did several things wrong, and was scared sick.
"Embellished" stories usually involve tactical shoulder-rolls and swooning praise by onlookers. Or, multiple attackers in an Alabama pharmacy.

A Hurricane Ike story from opencarry.org
It involves a knife and a rifle rather than a handgun, but it does deal with the emotional aspects of threatening deadly force in an "up-close and personal" way.
