Correction: Sergeant Snoxall, Royal Army Skill-at-arms instructor, hit a 12" target 38 times in one minute, at a range of 300 yards. Firing was from the prone position.

The "Lord Roberts Match", as it's called, is still fired when bolt action shooters congregate.

I've seen one reference to the record being called the "Hythe trophy".

I believe the record is 37 rounds on target in one minute. The target was a 20" circle at 200 yards, shooting offhand.

I can't recall the name of the fellow who did that. They named the trophy cup after him.

I'll have to poke around in my files to come up with the answer.

That's why they have all the extra wood. How'd you like to grab that barrel for a bayonet charge immediately after laying down 30+ rounds of suppressive fire?

Yes, I've emptied quite a few magazines that way, and it's very effective against man-sized targets at 200 yards.

The ergonomics of the Enfield make it the fastest bolt action rifle ever fielded. It's even faster than the very slick Swiss straight-pulls. (I have a K31 too.)

My first grab for a long gun (beyond shotgun range) would be any of my No.4 Enfields.

Even though it's bolt action, recovery time is just as fast as a semi.

p99guy, I like that M1938. It balances better than the M44, but I guess it recoils a bit worse, without the bayonet for weight.

Wait until you get into collecting milsurp rifles, and spend more for a "correct" bayonet than you spent for the rifle that it fits.

Seriously... I've got a few rifles where the complete and correct bayo, scabbard, and frog would cost double what the rifle cost.

I don't look at that as a negative, I just think it's proof that I got a great deal on the rifles.

There's also the old standard for scopes: "never spend less on a scope than you spent on the gun". It's true, although on some bargain guns I've spent 2-3 times the cost for a decent scope and mounting setup.

Predecessor, but not ancestor. Different designer (Simonov), and completely different design.

Just to make sure everyone is informed... modifying your SKS can put you afoul of 18 USC 922(r).

Because they're deemed to be without "sporting" value, they're only importable because they're military collectibles. When you modify one into a sporter configuration (or any other configuration that would be non-importable), you have now "manufactured" a banned firearm.

No, it makes no sense, but few of ATF's rulings do. I'm unaware of anyone being prosecuted for this, but it always pays to be cautious about what they could do if they chose to.
