This was a very common practice when I lived in Boston in the 70s. People did this so that your window wouldn't get broken or your trunk lock smashed in - all you would lose is your spare tire and your battery. And they would not have a car stereo, and would put a large sign on the dash that said NO RADIO so the junkies wouldn't tear up the dash mistakenly looking for one. Back then, everyone groaned when they heard that a shipment of heroin had been seized, since they knew that prices would skyrocket and the desperate junkies would go on crime sprees to pay the higher prices.SF and Oakland car owners leaving windows down, trunks open to prevent car damage, when their cars are targeted by robbers.
