Hhhhhhmmm, I'm beginning to think those that post "I'm not a lawyer" really ARE lawyers, every one of em, but as has been pointed out, can't bill for the posting.
So, be on the look out for those that post INAL as they're probably all stealth lawyers...who can't bear to admit it.
INAPOQYEQ (...and I'm not either)

Re: Why Post "I am not a lawyer...?
Perhaps we should end all our posts with disclaimers.
Post something about food - IANAC (I am not a chef)
- IANAG (I am not a grocer)
- IANAF (I am not a farmer)
Post something about politics - IANAP (I am not a politician)
Post something about guns - IANAG (I am not a gunsmith)
Use your imagination, sky's the limit.
Hey, if we're gonna be wimps, let's go all the way.
Why stop with just lawyer disclaimers?
After all, we might be sued by by anyone, for anything...

Re: Why Post "I am not a lawyer...?
If at the end of what one posts - one regurgitates a bit of a television ad that millions have seen and claim it's humor as if it were their own - that's not only exhibits a woeful lack of originality, it's pitiable.
Of course, many seem to think it original to offer up such gems as "If I told you I'd have to kill you" or "Tell us how you really feel" or "That's gonna leave a mark" without the slightest bit of embarrassment. In person, these same folks generally make extravagant gestures to go along with their sludgy witticisms.
I guess if one hasn't an original thought to offer - riding the coat tails of others is the next logical step.
Is doing this sort of thing really humorous or revealing?

Re: Why Post "I am not a lawyer...?
TAM,
My casual conversation reference was mostly tongue in cheek, mostly... As you can see I think INAL is one very over used ferslugenah (see Mad magazine circa 1950) and I say that in the kindest way.
Rocky Road is superior to mere chocolate as it not only contains chocolate, but has nuts and some kinda gooey stuff like marshmallow in it too.
I love it!
Now, what was it that Shakespeare said about lawyers?
Ah, until you need one...

TAM,
Your point is well taken, but I see INAL for many innocuous opinions.
Perhaps, the posting of such is simply de rigueur and will fade with time. At least when it comes to vanilla vs. chocolate.

Re: Why Post "I am not a lawyer...?
Alexander Solzhenitsyn stated something along the lines that "Western society is a litigious society..."
Many here seem to agree.
Should we ALL always offer our opinion with disclaiming boilerplate appended? You know, just in case...
Maybe we should, I don't know, but it seems like overkill and cause some (me for one) to do an eye roll.
Should we always make the same disclaimer in a casual conversation where you offer your opinion and make certain there are witnesses within earshot?
Is "Freedom of Speech" so degraded we must state such disclaimers in order to feel free?
Are we really that fearful?
Perhaps, there's a market for ball caps that state "I am not a lawyer" with a built in button that you can press every so often with a loud recording of same - you know, just to be safe.

Re: Why Post "I am not a lawyer...?
O.K.
Let's beat this horse a little further.
If you state something is your - OPINION - why wouldn't that be adequate in and of itself?
Opinion defined: A personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty

Why Post "I am not a lawyer...?
Is posting "I am not a lawyer" really necessary every time someone offers their opinion?
Are we all so afraid of litigation we need to post such a disclaimer ?
Am I the only one who finds this unnecessary?
Or, am I wrong and we should always post INAL to keep legal ramifications at bay?
Perhaps, if it is necessary we could start a sign up sheet stating we're not lawyers thus eliminating the need to post such disclaimers?
Opinions?
