Please don't feel that I am advocating no new posts on old subjects. I would just ask if someone posts a question that can't be answered in one response and has been heavily debated in previous threads, that they be referred to that previous thread first. If they still have questions after reviewing that thread(s), then they should post and ask. Many members do this already.
I do agree with everyone that we want to make sure that we don't stifle good discussions and learning, but we need to not rehash stuff that has hundreds of previous posts that can be reviewed for answers (or ultimately NO answer!)

Re: open carry
No, we have our assigned topic areas. You can see who the moderators are for a particular area just below the thread topic. Some of us do read all posts though (me for one.) Just reading your assigned areas can take a lot of time. I am not complaining, just stating a fact.
The forum has grown exponentially over the past year or so, and that means a LOT more posts. Keeping the posts relevant to the topic and not rehashing threads over and over helps not only the mods, but the members. Doing that tells someone there are new and different things to read and not the same-o'-same-o' being thrown out just to be posting.
With that said, the members of this forum are greatly appreciated. The information shared on this forum is invaluable to thousands of folks on the Internet. The wealth of knowledge that exists here is vast and there is no hesitation by individuals to jump in and share their views and knowledge. I encourage the everyone to participate in the threads and share their information. In my fairly short time here I have learned a tremendous amount for the members. Thank you all!

Re: open carry
For one reason the moderators have to read all of the posts, so the threads make it harder and harder for us to keep up.aardwolf wrote:As long as people are civil and don't cuss, what's the big deal if the same arguments are repeated over and over and over and over and over and . . .
People don't have to read every message. I don't reload so I don't read any of the reloading posts. If people are tired of the open carry discussion there's a lots of other choices.
Threads with valid discussions and new information are welcome and requested. However, just trying to win one more to your side of the issue when it has been debated over and over on the forum again and again and again is not productive use of the medium for the readers OR the mods.

Re: open carry
Not to mention almost everyone has a video camera hanging on their belt or in their purse these days in the form of a cell phone. You Tube would be full of videos of 'gun-toting crazys' walking around the stores and streets, and the media/anti's would have a field day promoting those.Charles L. Cotton wrote:If open carry were to pass in Texas, the media would make sure it didn't happen quietly. As we approached January 1, 1996, when Texas CHLs became effective, every TV and radio station in Houston was making sure their views/listeners knew it! Blood in the streets, Dodge City, etc. was right around the corner.
If open carry were to pass in Texas, they would do likewise, but the big difference is people will be able to look for guns openly carried, unlike concealed carry. I've already given my position on OC and the political reasons for it, so I won't repeat it (hint, hint). But whatever may be your opinion, don't base it on even the slightest chance that open carry would become the law without huge media attention and the fallout that comes with the TV cameras in grocery stores, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc.

I was at a slug fest once. It was in my garden. I hate them nasty little slimey green critters. Poured salt on every one of 'em I could!Mike1951 wrote:Better a laugh fest than a slug fest!

I support open carry of chocolate chip cookie dough by aliens then (CCCD would be my second choice over BBHMV!)

Re: open carry
I lived for 38 years in Missouri where open carry was not illegal, unless prohibited by local ordinances. Most towns didn't have an ordinance against it (usually only the big cities.)The Annoyed Man wrote: ...., the sight of a .44 cal Hog's Leg on the dashboard could be a great carjacking deterrent....
While it wasn't 'illegal', you had to be extremely careful about it. A handgun laying in the seat beside you was no problem, but on the dashboard of your car could be. Most of these states (and Texas) have laws against 'brandishing' a weapon. If you have it in plain sight and even got into any small argument, it could be construed as that. Road rage comes to mind for me as just honking at someone, and them seeing you with a pistol on the dash is SURELY going to result in a call.
Also, again, while not illegal, strolling around Wal-Mart with a S&W 500 glaring bright on your hip is going to draw a lot of attention, usually a phone call, and probably a LEO who is not going to be happy about having to respond.
I presonaly was very cautious about open carry, even with my badge displayed. I prefered to have it where God and I were the only ones who knew where it was stashed and we could get to it if needed. No attention drawn, no questions asked. If I accidently showed the weapon, it was no different than with a Texas CHL; it was unintentional (not illegal), covered up quickly and I went on about my business, very likely no one would think twice about it as I acted natural.
We just have to remember we are not in the old west. Society today is has folks out there not used to seeing someone with a 45 long Colt straped to their leg. There are uneasy folks that don't want guns around, and we just have to be discreet while exercising our rights so as to make them think that way. Remember, suprise is a vital element in getting the upper hand in most tactical situations.
My 2 cents.
