Actually, you need quite a bit of line between the radio and the G5RV for them to function properly. The twin-lead should be stretched out. There is not a lot of loss in coax on HF frequencies, so don't be worried about that part if you used decent RG-8 at least. How far is the run?nedmoore wrote:I have some great trees to hang it from but the distance to the trees from my radio is what is worrying me.

Re:
You're right Jim, it is really 'Best Regards'. I messed it up!jimlongley wrote:Someplace around here I have an "official" copy of the "92 Code" that lists 73 as "Best Regards."Keith B wrote:

However, it used to have more flowery meanings http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/history.html#73

Re: How many Hams are here?
Awesome JLaw. Will be nice to have another ham on the forum! Don't hesitate to ask questions if you have them.JLaw wrote:Kind of. I'm reading/studying the ARRL HAM Radio Licsense Manual at the moment, bought at Houston Amature Radio shop. I'll soon join NARS out of the Spring area (Northwest Amature Radio Society) and find someone willing to help and tutor a little.Keith B wrote:Did you find someone local to help you with your study and testing??JLaw wrote:JLaw will be soon, have made the commitment. Just started reading up & studying a little. Sounds very interesting, and overwhelming in some aspects!

Anyone here want to post or PM JLaw with info on becoming a HAM radio junkie? Been curious for a long time but know nothing about what's involved as far as radio cost, licsense fees, exams involved, etc.

Check out this thread http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... ilit=radio as there are some good links in it.
By your profile, you show to be in The Woodlands. There is the Northwest Amateur Radio Society radio club in Spring, TX that would be close http://www.w5nc.net/. Give them a email and let them know you are interested. Usually someone will contact you and offer to help. There might even be another ham on here that is close to you that would be willing to 'elmer' you.
