Reports of aggressive dog attacks on rise
By LeaAnne Klentzman
The old adage of bad things come in threes played out in reports of pit bull dog attacks across the county.
Sheriff’s deputies and Sugar Land police have responded to three pit bull dog attacks within days of each other. As reported last week, on Friday evening March 21, about 7:30 p.m., Sugar Land police were called to the 14000 block of Greenway Drive after calls about a couple of large vicious dogs running loose in the neighborhood. When officers arrived on the scene they learned that two pit bull dogs were running loose and had attacked a dog and scared playing children. When the dogs were located on the street, one of the pit bulls aggressively charged the officers without reason or provocation said police. That dog was shot and killed. Police notified the owner of the dog’s termination and issued him a citation for allowing his animals to run at large.
The following Tuesday evening another pit bull attack was reported in the Teal Run subdivision near Fresno. In this incident a pair of pit bull dogs got though more than one privacy fence and into a back yard attacking and killing that family’s pet Chihuahua. The next day a woman and her Schnoodle were attacked in Sienna Plantation.
The Sienna Plantation dog attack was the first of these three to have caused injury to a person. Terriann Carlson spokesperson for the sheriff’s department said a woman was walking to the school bus stop to meet her daughter when she and her Schnoodle puppy were attacked. A Schnoodle is a hybrid that is a cross-breed of a Poodle and a Schnauzer. This attack was on a sidewalk on Bees Creek Court in Sienna Plantation. Carlson said, “Upon arrival, two pit bulls were located near a fence and mauling at the corpse of a small black poodle.
She went on to explain that the preliminary investigation revealed that the 34 year old female victim, was carrying her dog in her arms when she was approached by two pit bulls. “The pit bulls began snipping at the poodle, causing her to drop the dog, said Carlson. In an attempt to intervene, the woman tried to pick up her Schnoodle puppy causing the dogs to attack her causing bite injuries to her face, mouth and body. She was treated for her injuries at a local hospital and released. Her puppy’s body was taken to a veterinary clinic by a neighbor reportedly to document its injuries and cause of death.
Fort Bend Animal Control responded to the scene and took control of the two pit bull dogs who belonged to linebacker Steve Foley formerly with the Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers. Because of the biting attack, the dogs are required by law to be quarantined for at least 240 clock hours.
Animal Control officers could not comment on this specific incident but said once the quarantine time frame has expired placement of the dogs is out of their hands. Without specific court orders the dogs will be returned to their owner in this case like any other, said the Director of Fort Bend Animal Control.
