I say go to a gun range and rent several guns and see what you shoot better with. Go with the one you shoot best with naturally. Life and death situation, you aren't going to be thinking rationally, it will be instinct.
I don't see what there isn't to like about the grip safety?
I have shot a kimber with the grip safety and it works fine, in my experience.
I don't always keep my XD locked and loaded at the house. Well, no problem normally. The other night I heard a noise and tried to pull back the slide on my gun. No dice. It stuck. Of course I thought what in the world is wrong with this gun, I just cleaned it!

After messing around with it for a minute or so, I realized you have to have the grip safety pressed to be able to bring the slide back and load a round. Not something you want to think about if you really need a round loaded. I'm too used to Glocks. They don't have that problem.
That's built into the XD for sure, but I have to wonder why anyone would try to cycle the slide without first having a firm grasp on the grip anyway....

I think GCM makes great points. You MUST look at the cons of a gun just like you look at the pros of a gun. I personally own a 3" and 4" XD (both .40 S&W) and not only have I had zero problems with the extractor and mags, but both of the guns have seen well over 3,000 rounds. My father carries an 3" XD (9mm) daily and only he and God know how many rounds have gone through that thing. All I know is he picks up a 250-rd box of Remington UMC every Sunday at Academy, and I've heard no complaints yet. Again, these are just thoughts... At the end of the day, I think many here will agree with me when I say you (or any shooter) would be a fool to buy a firearm on hearsay alone. Sounds like you're doing some good research. Good luck and at the academy.
