Coolness. Mr brother-in-law and nephew have a couple of those. They can take a little more impact than some of the cheaper replicas.

My wife got me a gun magazine and some cash for shooting accessories. It's a nice start, since she's not really excited about guns.

i understand its common practice, but what difference does it make? Maybe I'm missing something but it just sounds like undue paranoia.

"Hey... that's my gun that was stolen.... I've got the serial number right here!" That's why it's common practice to obscure serial numbers.
