I had low back surgery about 19 years ago. At that time they just simply "trimmed" the disk out and left it bone on bone. From your description, your low back pain sounds very similar to what I experience.
While prayer is certainly effective, I've also found that a good chiropractor can work wonders, as well. My back had seized up a day or two before my very first visit with my chiropractor (the pain usually lasts close to a week, gradually decreasing each day), and I left his office almost completely pain free.
