No, basic conservation of momentum means that a round will not knock a man flying. And at off-the-muzzle range, birdshot can certainly be deadly. But as ranges increase from inches to feet or yards, penetration of small shot may be insufficient to stop a predator, especially if they're wearing a thick leather (motorcycle?) jacket.

Given a choice, I will not put my faith in a shotgun loaded with birdshot, or even the smaller sizes of buckshot.

Wish I knew more details, but the use of the word "pellets" in the story suggests birdshot was used . . .

I think I'll load at least 00 buck if I'm ever prepping a shotgun for home defense.
