A guy in Tucson approaches me while I'm pumping gas, sees my Texas plates, and tells me he's from Texas too, and us Texans have to stick together, right? I stopped him right there and told him I don't carry cash. He lost interest in our common interests and wandered off.
A guy in Florida approached me at a gas pump many years ago. He said I saw your Texas plates and that your car came from a dealer in Brownsville...I'm from the RGV and my parents live there. Oh, I say...what does your dad do? He works for XXX. I work for XXX too....what office does he work in? He works at the XXX XXXXXX office. Really, what's his name? His name is XXXXX. Well, I not only know your dad, he is in the office right next to mine and we work together on various projects. I ask him....what brings you to Florida? I'm going to a job interview in Tampa.

Still at the same gas station, my wife goes into the office to pay (this was many moons ago), and I see some guy (a different guy) chatting her up. She gets back to the car and I ask what that was about. Oh, he saw our Texas plates and that the car was purchased in Brownsville and asked if we were from the RGV....I said we were and that my husband went to HS in Port Isabel. He said he went to HS in Port Isabel. He said he didn't think you knew him but he was a freshman when you were a senior.

Countryside wrote:One of the best stories I read was a guy who had seen a certain guy at various places around town. He walked everywhere he went. This same guy approached him for money once as he was leaving a store. He asked the guy "Didn't I see you way over on the other side of town at such-and-such location?" They guy said "Yeah, probably, I walk all over town." The man telling the story said "I then told him that if he was healthy enough to walk all over town asking people for money, he was healthy enough to stand behind a counter and say "May I take your order, please?"

I don't give anyone cash. If they need shoes, I'll buy them shoes. If they need food, we'll provide them some food. If they need gas, we'll get them a little gas.
I don't fund anyone's alcohol, tobacco, drug or lottery needs.
That's pretty much my policy too. I believe we are all called to be charitable when charity is legitimately needed, and we should be willing to rise to the occasion if faced with that need; but none of us are called to stupid or pushovers.

A few years ago my wife bought McDonalds for a guy (against my wishes) that was on the street corner with a sign that read "Hungry please help" After she gave it to him I got her to stop across the street and watch... after a few minutes he tossed it in the trash can there in the medium. Needless to say she doesn't do that anymore.
He was holding out for Whataburger.
Nah! He was holding out for In 'N Out.
