Sorry, I didn't realize Nick was traveling by car; thought he was traveling by air. I should have read more carefully.

FOPA protects you while traveling through the state, and I believe the factory box locked and in the trunk will be fine. The gun has to be unloaded, which in most states means a loaded mag can be next to the pistol and the gun is still considered "unloaded." I don't know about Alabama, so I'd probably take the rounds out of the mags.

Yes, the factory box is fine. As for the mags, as I recall Jim's posts on this subject, I think loaded mags are fine, so long as the ammo is covered. I think Jim also said putting them in a mag pouch will do. You might run a search on posts by Jim Longley (jimlongley) and get more and better information.
