I don't think I'd feel comfortable carrying a gun that was known to be broken. I don't know how the XD grip safety works internally, but I could imagine a situation where a loose spring or piece of a spring gets into the wrong place and causes other, more serious problems.

Rule of thumb.... NEVER "bubba" a carry weapon. That said, a number of Texas Rangers back in the day used to wrap a piece of wet leather around their 1911 grips so that when the the leather shrank, it would keep the grip safety permanently depressed. (They would sometimes also have a gunsmith remove the trigger guard, relying only on the thumb safety to keep the cocked weapon from discharging. As I recall, your XD doesn't have a thumb safety.) After a lot of these old boys had retired, some of them still liked to show up for their annual pistol requalifications, even though it was no longer necessary. One of them showed up with one such modified 1911 and the young RSO wouldn't let him use it to qualify with, asking "don't you think that gun is dangerous?" ......To which the old boy responded, "Heck yes it's dangerous. I wouldn't carry it otherwise!"

Now, I'm in no way recommending you carry your XD that way. Like that old Texas Ranger said, it's dangerous. And I'm not counting on any of us to be as self assured with a firearm as any of them were.....and some of them might have been just a little bit crazy.....in a good way....but not made of the same stuff as the rest of us. In other words, I would STRONGLY recommend that you leave that gun unloaded and in the safe until such time as you can ship it back to SA for repairs. They should be covering the repairs and the freight, and you'll find that their customer service is very responsive.
