If you like fishin', huntin', friendly neighbors and cheap rural livin', look to the Pineywoods of east Texas. Start with the Lake Fork area and move south to the city of Tyler (Pop. 100,000 +/-) and then go down to the Sam Rayburn Reservoir area. It's all mostly BYOB, but the more enlightened communities (Tyler excluded) have purveyors of adult beverages.
Neither Houston nor Dallas nor Shreveport are far (by Texas standards) from anywhere in east Texas.
Other than the summer heat and humidity, it's pretty much okay. But what the hey, in the summer you can always go visit your friends at GLTC.
