Andy, I think I agree with you as far as the shenanigans are concerned. One high kick to the chest should've had an immediate red card. Additionally, I didn't think all of the holding, hair pulling and eye gouging, etc. was allowed but apparently that is the way the game is played on this level? Oh well, I enjoyed what I saw of the Cup. Perhaps, I'll still be around in 2014 to see the next World's Cup?

FWIW, we watched Invictus last night. That was a nice "feel good" movie about another World Cup in your former part of the blue planet.

SALUT!

Re: Any one else excited about the World Cup?

Final Score - Spain 1 Germany 0

A great game by both teams! The level of play, both from a team and an individual standpoint, was far superior to that exhibited by the USA, IMO. Did y'all notice how both teams kept their front line spread and played the whole field instead of bunching up in front of the goal? That is not only skill, it is also discipline and patience and it is one of the hardest things to teach young players.

Re: Any one else excited about the World Cup?

I kept looking for the right wing. When all of the strikers gang up in front of the goal, where do the defenders also gang up?

I'm very glad for the overdue victory but the front line has to spread out and the defenders have to do a better job of marking their opposition if we are to move forward through the next round. BTW, IANASP.

Re: Any one else excited about the World Cup?

The US team was robbed of a victory today! This referee was blatantly opposed to the US for some apparent political reason. His blown and/or neglected calls were way beyond incompetance. Watch it out on the news tonight.

Precisely, and Wings can likewise receive a pass from the middle to make a run on the goal...

It was an exciting game, to say the least.

Our back 4 need to figure out man marking.... :totap:

Tim Howard is a beast! He deserved Man of the Match, hands down. :clapping:
:iagree:; HOWEVER Howard needs to play his goal kicks to his Fullbacks rather than the middle of the pitch. Kicks to midfield kept coming back as attacks on the US goal and didn't give the US Fullbacks a chance to advance the ball to the US Midfielders so that they could advance the ball to their Wings and launch concerted 5 across attacks on the English goal.

Re: Any one else excited about the World Cup?

In a previous life, long ago and far away, I had to learn soccer and then coached youth soccer in B'Ham, Alabama when youth soccer was in its infancy in the South and Bear Bryant was still alive and coaching at "Roll Tide U" and "Shug" Jordan was coaching at "War Eagle U". Oftentimes, it was difficult to get the parents to think that their kid's "Red Team" games on Saturday were as important as that what was going on in Tuscaloosa or Auburn.

Like I said, that was a long time ago {SIGH} and yes, I still think soccer is a beautiful dance. Please enjoy the matches and may your team prevail by a score of 3-2.
