I'm not sure whether or not they qualify in your judgment as a "good" gun. They are very cost efficient and fairly simple. My son had a P-11 that he used as a carry piece for a while. I have shot it and although it's not my favorite pistol, to my knowledge it always went bang when asked and would always hit the target if the shooter did his part. Some people absolutely love them. It just didn't fit my hand too well, so it wasn't comfortable to shoot, but I could hit with it.
Oh yeah, and I just remembered Charter Arms. Revolvers only, but they are low cost and Charter stands behind them for life. Made in the USA. Never had one but thinking about picking one up. I've heard they are not the quality of a S&W, but they aren't as expensive either.
